Reading, Writing and Comparing Whole Numbers Beyond 1,000,000
Lesson 2 of 6
30 min
Let's begin
On the radio, Keza hears: “The district has built roads worth two billion, five hundred million francs.” Her brother asks her to write the number down. How many zeros does she need?
Today you will turn big numbers into words, and words back into numbers.
Worked example 1
13 246 394
Worked example 2
7 008 020
Worked example 3
2 500 000 000
Numbers from 21 to 99 take a hyphen: forty-six, ninety-four. When you speak, you may also hear “three hundred and ninety-four”. That is fine too.
Worked example 4
“Four million, sixty thousand, seven”
Worked example 5
“Twelve billion, three hundred million, five hundred thousand”
Tip
Every family gets three seats. After the first group, each family must fill exactly three seats. If a family has only “sixty”, it sits as 0-6-0. Count your seats before you write the next family.
Work each one in your exercise book first, then tap Show answer to check.
