Relationship and Friendship
Lesson 2 of 5
12 min
Let's begin
Keza and Uwase have been friends since P1. When Keza won the reading competition, Uwase cheered the loudest. When Uwase's mother was in hospital, Keza shared her notes and walked her home every day.
Their friendship makes both of them stronger. That is a healthy relationship.
A healthy relationship is one where people treat each other well, and both feel safe, respected and happy. It helps both people grow into better people.
| Quality | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Respect | You listen to each other and accept differences in religion, background or opinion. |
| Trust | You can count on each other and you keep promises. |
| Honesty | You tell the truth, even when it is hard. |
| Generosity | You share your time, your things and your help without asking for payment. |
| Humility | You do not boast or look down on others, and you can say "I was wrong". |
| Patience | You stay calm and do not get angry quickly when your friend makes mistakes. |
| Kindness | You care about your friend's feelings. |
| Forgiveness | You accept "sorry" and do not hold grudges. |
| Loyalty | You stand by each other and do not gossip about your friend. |
| Good communication | You talk about problems calmly instead of fighting. |
| Fairness | You take turns and share equally. |
"Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag, is not proud, doesn't behave itself inappropriately, doesn't seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil." (1 Corinthians 13:4–5)
This passage is a checklist for a healthy friendship: patience, kindness, humility, and not keeping a record of wrongs.
"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow." (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10)
"The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren." (Qur'an 49:10)
"We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct." (Qur'an 49:13)
"Naught else than" means "nothing other than", and "brethren" means brothers. These verses teach that believers should live as brothers and sisters and make peace, and that the best person is the one who behaves best, not the richest or the strongest.
