Singing: Short Songs You Can Sing to Anyone
Lesson 2 of 9
10 min
Let's begin
Mutesi walks to school on the red path every morning.
Her friend Keza waits for her at the corner by the big tree.
They sing all the way to the school gate.
Today you will learn a song about why school is good.
Some songs tell a story. Some songs give you advice.
A school song tells you why school matters.
It is not just a nice noise to fill the walk.
This is a new song, written for you. Sing it to any tune you like.
I walk to school, I walk with my friend.
I open my book, I hold my pen.
I learn to read, I learn to count.
School is a good place to be.
Say each line first. Then sing it. Then sing all four lines together.
Worked example
Somebody asks Mutesi what her song is about.
She does not sing the song back at them. That is not an answer.
She uses the short script: this song says that ...
So Mutesi says: this song says that school is good, because I learn there and my friend is there.
Careful! If your answer is only the word nice, you have not said the message yet.
Go through your song line by line before you sing it.
Stop at any word you cannot explain. Ask somebody what it means.
Then say that word out loud three times, slowly and clearly.
Now the line belongs to you, and the tune is easy to add.
Tip
This song says that ..
Use those four words every time somebody asks about a song.
Then finish the sentence in your own words.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
Sing the school song twice. What two things do you learn at school in the song?
Answer: to read and to count.
Somebody asks what your song is about. How do you start your answer?
Answer: this song says that ...
Name one new word in your song and say what it means.
Answer: any word is fine, as long as you can explain it. A pen is the thing you write with.
Make up one more line about your own school.
Answer: for example, my teacher shows me how. Keep it short so it fits the tune.
Sing the whole song to one person at home, then tell them what it says.
Answer: sing first, explain after. Both halves count.
