Singing: Short Songs You Can Sing to Anyone
Lesson 6 of 9
10 min
Let's begin
Niyonzima walks the same path to school every day.
There is a tall tree, a tap, and a blue wrapper lying in the grass.
He has walked past that wrapper for a week.
Today you will sing about your own path, and then change one thing on it.
The environment is not a far-away forest.
Your environment is everything you can see from your door.
Your yard. Your path. Your tree. Your tap. The grass beside the road.
Careful! Planting a tree is not the only way to look after it. Picking up one wrapper counts too.
This is a new song, written for you. Put your own path into it.
This is my home, this is my path.
Here is my tree, here is my tap.
I sweep the yard, I close the tap.
I pick the wrapper off the grass.
Worked example
Niyonzima looks along his path.
He cannot plant a forest. He is six.
But he can pick up that blue wrapper on the way home.
So Niyonzima says: I will pick up the wrapper by the tap today.
One small thing, done, beats one big thing, talked about.
Think of umuganda, when everybody works on the last Saturday morning.
Nobody plants a whole forest that day.
People sweep, cut the grass, fill the holes in the road and carry the rubbish away.
All of it is small work. All of it is looking after the place.
Tip
Everything you can see from your door
Stand in your doorway and look out.
All of that is yours to look after.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
Where is your environment?
Answer: everything you can see from your door.
Name two ways to look after your place.
Answer: sweep the yard, close the tap, pick up rubbish, plant something. Any two.
Umutoni says only grown-ups at umuganda can protect the environment. Is she right?
Answer: no. A child picking up one wrapper is protecting it too.
Sing the song with your own tree and your own path in it.
Answer: swap the words to fit what you really see.
Name the one thing you will do on your path today.
Answer: say it out loud, then go and do it.
