Singing: Short Songs You Can Sing to Anyone
Lesson 9 of 9
11 min
Let's begin
Umutoni has to sing in front of the whole class.
Her hands go cold and her voice comes out very small.
She knows every word of the song, but nobody can hear them.
Today you will learn how to stand up and let the song out.
Put your feet a little apart. Stand still.
Lift your chin and look at the people, not at the floor.
Take one slow breath before the first word.
Then start. Do not stop in the middle to say sorry.
Pick the person sitting furthest away from you.
Send the words all the way to that person.
That is not shouting. That is sharing.
Careful! A tiny voice feels safer, but the words disappear, and the song you worked on is lost.
Worked example
Umutoni tries again at home first.
She stands one wall away from her grandmother.
Feet apart. Chin up. One breath.
She sings the whole song without stopping, even though her hands still shake.
Then she says what the song means.
Shaking hands are not a reason to stop. They go away while you sing.
Tip
Tall, up, breathe, start
Say those four words to yourself before you sing.
They give your body something to do while you are nervous.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
What do you do just before your first word?
Answer: stand tall, look up and take one slow breath.
You feel shy. Should you sing very quietly?
Answer: no. Send your voice to the person furthest away.
You forget one word in the middle. What do you do?
Answer: keep going to the end. Do not stop and start again.
Ask one person at home to stand at the far side of the room and listen to you.
Answer: sing the whole song to them, then ask if they heard every word.
After you sing, tell your listener what the song says.
Answer: this song says that ... Singing it and explaining it both count.
