Singing and Clapping: Keeping the Rhythm
Lesson 4 of 8
11 min
Let's begin
Keza meets her neighbour at the water tap early in the morning.
She looks at her feet and says nothing. The neighbour smiles and walks on.
Today you will learn three words to sing, and to say to real people.
Mwaramutse is for the morning. It means good morning.
Muraho is for when you meet somebody.
Murakoze is for when somebody helps you. It means thank you.
Say each one out loud now, three times.
Sometimes you break something or push somebody.
Then you say you are sorry, and you look at the person while you say it.
That is a polite word too, and it is the hardest one.
Worked example
Sing this line to any tune you know:
Mwaramutse in the morning, murakoze when you help me.
Clap once on mwaramutse. Clap once on murakoze.
Sing it four times at walking speed, with the claps in those same two places.
Careful! Many children keep their polite words for grown-ups only.
Your small brother helps you carry water. He gets a murakoze too.
Your friend shares a mango. She gets a murakoze too.
A polite word costs you nothing and it makes the other person glad.
Tip
