Singing and Clapping: Keeping the Rhythm
Lesson 3 of 8
11 min
Let's begin
Ishimwe walks to school on the same path every morning.
Today there is a wrapper in the grass by the tap. He steps over it and walks on.
Today you will sing about your own place, and find one thing you can do for it.
Your environment is everything you can see from your door.
The yard. The path. The tap. The trees. The rubbish that should not be there.
It is not far away in a big forest. It is right here where your feet are.
A song about your place carries small words that tell you what to do.
Plant a tree. Water it. Sweep the yard.
Do not throw rubbish on the path. Do not burn things near the house.
Say each word out loud and clap once on it.
Worked example
Here is a line you can sing to any tune you know:
Sweep the yard, plant the tree, keep my place clean for me.
Clap on sweep, on plant and on clean. Three claps, same place every time.
This is not an old song. You made it. You can change the words.
Careful! Many children think only planting a tree counts.
Picking up one wrapper is looking after your environment.
So is closing the tap. So is sweeping your yard before school.
At umuganda the whole umudugudu does this together, one Saturday morning a month.
Now choose one thing on your own path. That one is yours.
Tip
Your place, your job
Stand at your door and look out. Everything you can see is your environment.
Do not wait for a tree to plant. Pick up one thing today.
