Singing and Clapping: Keeping the Rhythm
Lesson 5 of 8
10 min
Let's begin
Habimana grabs the ball out of Mutesi's hands. Then he says murakoze and runs off.
Mutesi stands there. The word was right but something felt wrong.
Today you will learn what your hands must do while your mouth is polite.
Words come before hands.
Say: may I have it, please. Then wait.
Wait for the other person to say yes. Taking first and thanking after is not polite.
When somebody is talking, let them reach the end.
Hold your words in your mouth until it is your turn.
It is the same at the tap. The one who came first fills first.
If you break something or hurt somebody, go back to them.
Look at them. Say you are sorry. Then help to fix it.
Careful! Running away is easier, but the sorry is the thing that mends it.
Mutesi has one mango and two friends. She cuts it and hands the pieces out.
Nobody had to ask her. That is politeness too.
Give away the good seat sometimes. Let the smaller child go first at the door.
Worked example
Sing this line at walking speed:
I ask, I wait, I say sorry when I am wrong.
Clap once on ask, once on wait, once on sorry.
Three claps, same places, four times through.
Then pick one of the three and do it before you sleep tonight.
Tip
Your hands agree with your mouth
Ask first, then take. Wait, then talk. Say sorry, then help to fix it.
A polite word on top of a rough hand is not politeness.
Answer each one, then tap Show answer to check.
Byiringiro grabs your rubber and says thank you. Was that polite?
Answer: no. He must ask first and wait for you to say yes.
Somebody is still talking and you have a good answer. What do you do?
Answer: wait until they finish, then speak.
You knocked over your friend's water. What are the two things you do?
Answer: say you are sorry, and help to clean it up.
Three children are at the tap. Who fills first?
Answer: the one who came first. Everyone else waits their turn.
Sing the line with claps on ask, wait and sorry.
Answer: three claps in the same three places, at walking speed.
