My Family's Story
Lesson 1 of 3
9 min
Let's begin
Uwase sits outside with her grandmother.
The sun is going down behind the hill.
Her grandmother says, When I was small, there was no road here.
Uwase did not know that. Today you will learn about your own family story.
Some stories are made up. A talking goat is made up.
History is different. History is what really happened.
It happened before today. Often long before you were born.
Nobody invents history. Nobody can change it either.
History is not only about big countries.
Your own family has one. We call it family history.
Family history is the story of your family in the past.
It tells you three things:
It is about your family only.
Your friends and your neighbours are not in it.
They each have a family story of their own.
Here is Gatete's family history. It is very short.
His grandfather grew beans on a hill far away.
His mother and father came to live near the road.
Then Gatete was born, and later his young sister.
That is all a family history is. Real people. Real days.
Your family was here before you came.
Your grandmother was a small girl once. She played too.
Careful! Some children think nothing counts before they were born.
Most of your family story happened then.

Tip
Real, not made up
Ask one question: did this really happen to my family?
If the answer is yes, it is family history.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
A goat in a book talks to a bird. Is that family history?

Keza's grandmother was born in a village near Lake Kivu. Is that family history?
Answer: yes. It is a real thing about a real person in her family.
Family history tells you three things. Name one of them.
Answer: who was in your family, where they lived, or what they did.
Mugisha says his family story starts on the day he was born. Is he right?
