Peace and Honesty
Lesson 1 of 6
10 min
Let's begin
It is break time at Uwase's school.
There is one ball and many children.
Nobody grabs it. Everybody gets a turn.
Today you will learn what peace means.
Peace is not a thing you can hold.
Peace is the way people live together.
In a peaceful place, everybody is treated well.
You can see peace in what people do.
Being kind. You speak softly to your friend.
Sharing. You give Keza half of your mandazi.
Helping. You carry the jerrycan with Mugisha.
Respecting. You listen when somebody is talking.
Saying sorry. You step on a foot, so you say sorry.
Careful! Many children think peace means quiet.
A class can be very quiet and still be angry.
A class can be noisy and full of peace.
So do not listen for silence. Look at how people are treated.
Keza lends her pencil to Ishimwe. That is peace.
Gatete waits for his turn on the ball. That is peace.
Umutoni says sorry for pushing. That is peace.
Nobody wrote those things in a book of rules.
The children just chose them, one small time at a time.
You make peace many times in one day.
An REB story in Kinyarwanda about living together in peace. It is a listening story, so sit still and listen with a grown-up.
