Introduction to the Piano Keyboard
Lesson 2 of 5
20 min
Let's begin
Gatete's piano book has small numbers above the notes: 1, 3, 5. "Is that maths?" he asks. No! Those numbers tell you which finger to use.
Piano players give each finger a number. It is the same on both hands:
When your hands rest on the keys, the two thumbs are next to each other in the middle, and the little fingers are on the outside.
Tip
Thumbs are number one! On both hands the thumb is 1 and the little finger is 5. Wave your thumbs and say "one, one!"
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Which finger is number 3?
Answer: The middle finger (on both hands).
Hold up finger 5 on your left hand. Which finger is it?
Answer: The little finger.
Where should you sit at the keyboard?
Answer: In the middle, in front of middle C.
What shape should your fingers be?
Answer: Gently curved, as if holding an orange.
Should your wrists drop below the keys?
Answer: No. Keep them relaxed and level.
