My Friends and I
Lesson 3 of 5
40 min
The school holidays are coming soon! Everyone in Primary 4 is talking about their plans. Mugisha got a message from his friend Ishimwe, who is full of plans.
Today you will read Ishimwe's message and learn to talk about your own plans for the future.
Hi Mugisha,
The school holidays start next Friday, and I have big plans!
First, I am going to visit my grandmother in Musanze. My father and I are going to travel by bus. Grandmother has two cows and many chickens, so I am going to help her on the farm. She is going to show me how to milk a cow!
On the last Saturday of the month, Grandmother is going to do umuganda with her neighbours. They are going to plant trees near the road. I am going to carry water for the young trees.
My cousin Umutoni is going to teach me to weave a small basket. I am going to give it to my mother as a present.
I am not going to watch TV all day. I am going to read two storybooks, too!
What are you going to do in the holidays? Write back soon!
Your friend,
Ishimwe
When do the school holidays start?
Next Friday.
Where is Ishimwe going to go, and how is he going to travel?

What is Ishimwe going to do during umuganda?
He is going to carry water for the young trees.
Which of Ishimwe's plans do you like best? Why?
Possible answer: learning to milk a cow, because it is new and useful.

Saying no: put not after am, is or are: I am not going to watch TV all day.
Asking: put am, is or are first:
Mugisha: What are you going to do in the holidays?
Ishimwe: I'm going to visit my grandmother.
Mugisha: Are you going to travel by bus?
Ishimwe: Yes, I am.
Mugisha: Is Keza going to come with you?
Ishimwe: No, she isn't. She's going to stay in Kigali.
tomorrow, next week, next Friday, this weekend, in the holidays, next year
Next year, I am going to join the school choir.
Write a message to a friend, like Ishimwe's. Tell them four things you are going to do in the holidays and one thing you are not going to do.
Speak: Walk around the class and ask, “What are you going to do this weekend?” Find a friend who has the same plan as you.
Tip
Plans need three parts: am/is/are + going to + verb.
I am going to read. She is going to swim. They are going to dance. Don't forget the am, is or are!
