Wild Animals
Lesson 5 of 5
30 min
Say these two words: eagle and feet. Listen to the vowel sound. It is the same! It sounds like the name of the letter E.
But look: eagle uses ea, and feet uses ee. Many animal words have this long e sound. Today you will learn to spell them.
| ee | ea |
|---|---|
| cheetah, sheep, bee, teeth, feet, green, tree, sleep, deep, feed, reeds | eagle, beak, leaf, leaves, eat, sea, beast, meat, clean, reach, beach |
There is no perfect rule, so read the words often and learn them by heart. Two helps:
Sometimes ea makes a short e sound, as in “bed”: head, bread, feather, weather, breakfast. Birds have feathers!
The eagle has a beak, the cheetah has quick feet,
The monkey in the tree eats green leaves for a treat.
The sheep sleep in the heat, the bee buzzes on the leaf,
And the lion by the reeds shows his big white teeth!
Find the long e words: eagle, beak, cheetah, feet, tree, eats, green, leaves, treat, sheep, sleep, heat, bee, leaf, reeds, teeth.
Speak: Say the chant with a friend. Clap on every long e word.
Write: Make two lists, ee words and ea words, with at least five words each. Then write two sentences about wild animals that use one word from each list. Example: A cheetah has fast feet. An eagle has a sharp beak.
Tip
Two e's in feet, e-a in eat. Say it, see it, write it. Make a little word card for each tricky word and read your cards every day.
