Lesson 4 of 4
30 min
Say these two words: right and write. They sound exactly the same! But they are spelt differently and mean different things.
Both have the long i sound, like the name of the letter I. Today you will learn the different ways to spell this sound.
| igh | ie | y (at the end) | i-e |
|---|---|---|---|
| right, night, light, high, fight, bright, might, sight | tie, lie, pie, die, cries, tries | my, by, cry, try, why, fly, shy, sky | write, time, like, bike, ride, smile, line |
right (a right; correct) and write (put words on paper). night (when it is dark) and knight (a soldier on a horse, long ago).
I have the right to learn and write,
To play in the light and sleep at night.
So I will try, and I won't fight,
I'll help my friends and do what's right!
Find the long i words: I, right, write, light, night, try, I'll, fight.
Speak: Say the chant with a friend. Clap on every long i word.
Write: Make four lists with the headings igh, ie, y and i-e. Add three words to each list. Then write two sentences about rights that use a word with igh. Example: Every child has the right to a light, safe home.
Tip
Right has a silent “gh”; write has a silent “w”. Say “r-igh-t” and “w-r-ite” slowly in your head when you spell them.
