Introduction to Athletics
Lesson 2 of 3
20 min
Let's begin
Byiringiro sprints down the runway, leaps with all his strength and lands far out in the sand. His friends cheer. But the teacher calls, "Foul! It does not count."
Byiringiro is puzzled. What did he do wrong? In this lesson you will learn the four parts of the long jump and its rules.
The long jump is a field event. You sprint along a runway, jump from a take-off board and fly as far as you can into a sand pit. The athlete with the longest fair jump wins.
A jump is measured from the end of the board to the mark in the sand that is nearest to the board. So if you land on your feet but then fall back and put a hand down behind you, the jump is measured to your hand. Your jump becomes shorter! That is why jumpers always fall forward.
Stay safe: dig and rake the sand so it is soft and flat, and check it for stones, glass and sticks. Only one jumper at a time. Everyone else waits well away from the pit.
Tip
Board, knee, feet, forward! Hit the board with one foot, drive your knee up, reach with your feet, and fall forward in the sand.

Name the four parts of the long jump.
Answer: Run-up, take-off, flight and landing.
Byiringiro's foot went past the end of the board. What happens?
Answer: It is a foul, so the jump does not count.
Uwase's feet land at 2 m 50 cm, but she falls back and puts her hand down at 2 m 10 cm. Which distance counts?
Answer: 2 m 10 cm, because the jump is measured to the mark nearest the board.
Why does a fast run-up help?
Answer: The faster you are moving at take-off, the further you fly.
In the standing long jump, Gatete jumps 1 m 40 cm and Keza jumps 1 m 55 cm. Who jumps further, and by how much?
Answer: Keza, by 15 cm.
