Introduction to Volleyball
Lesson 2 of 3
15 min
Let's begin
Niyonzima receives the serve with a good forearm pass, but the ball goes straight back over the net. The other team hits it down, and they win the point.
What if his team had used all its touches? Today you will learn the overhead pass, and how a team uses its three touches.
Each team may touch the ball up to three times before it must go over the net. One player may not touch the ball two times in a row. Good teams use all three:
The overhead pass (the set) is soft and accurate, because you use your fingers.
The ball must bounce off your fingers quickly. If you catch it, hold it or throw it, that is a fault, and the other team wins the point.
Warning
Stay safe
Tip
Window, fingers, spring!
Make a window above your forehead, touch with your fingers, and spring up with your arms and legs together. And for the team: bump, set, hit.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the most touches one team may use before the ball goes over the net?
Answer: Three.
Which part of your hands touches the ball in an overhead pass?
Answer: The pads of your fingers, not your palms.
Mutesi catches the ball, then throws it to a teammate. Is that allowed?
Answer: No. Catching or holding the ball is a fault, so the other team wins the point.
Put the three team touches in order.
Answer: Bump (forearm pass), set (overhead pass), hit (over the net).
