Rabbits and Chickens Management
Lesson 2 of 5
20 min
Let's begin
After the rain, Uwase picks fresh sweet potato leaves and gives them straight to her rabbits. They gobble them up. But the next morning one rabbit has a swollen belly and runny droppings.
What went wrong? The leaves were wet. Feeding rabbits well is not only about giving them food, but the right food in the right way.
Rabbits are herbivores. Good foods for them are:
A rabbit's front teeth never stop growing. Chewing lots of grass wears them down, so grass is very important.
| Disease | Signs | Cause and prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Diarrhoea and bloat | runny droppings; swollen, hard belly | wet, mouldy or dirty food. Give dry, fresh food. |
| Coccidiosis | diarrhoea, big belly, thin rabbit that stops eating | tiny germs spread in droppings in a dirty hutch. Clean the hutch every day; keep droppings out of food and water. |
| Mange | itching; scabs on the ears, nose and feet; fur falls out | tiny mites that spread from rabbit to rabbit. Keep sick rabbits apart; get medicine from a vet. |
| Colds and pneumonia | sneezing, runny nose, noisy breathing | cold wind and a damp, dirty hutch. Keep the hutch dry and out of the wind, but airy. |
Every day: look at each rabbit, clean the hutch, and put a sick rabbit in a room of its own at once. Ask the sector veterinary officer (the vet) for help, and wash your hands after touching rabbits.
Tip
Rabbit food must be DRY, FRESH and CLEAN: never wet, never mouldy
Spot a sick rabbit? Separate it, then call the vet.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Why must you not give rabbits wet grass?
Answer: Wet food can give rabbits bloat (a swollen belly) and diarrhoea.
Name two signs of mange.
Answer: Any two of: itching, scabs on the ears, nose or feet, fur falling out.
What should you do first when you see a sick rabbit?
Answer: Put it in a room of its own so the others do not catch the disease, then ask a vet for help.
For about how many days is a doe pregnant?
Answer: About 31 days.
Give two reasons why families keep rabbits.
Answer: Any two of: meat, money from sales, manure for the garden, skins, they need little space.
