Rabbits and Chickens Management
Lesson 5 of 5
20 min
Let's begin
In Ishimwe's village, many chickens suddenly fell sick and died within a few days. The vet said it was Newcastle disease. But all the chickens of Ishimwe's aunt stayed healthy. Why? She had vaccinated them.
| Disease | Signs | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Newcastle disease | trouble breathing, twisted neck, green watery droppings; many birds die quickly | caused by a virus and has no cure, so vaccinate on time and keep sick birds away |
| Coccidiosis | bloody or watery droppings; weak birds with ruffled feathers, mostly young ones | tiny germs live in wet, dirty litter: keep litter dry and clean; medicine from the vet |
| Fowl pox | scabs and spots on the comb and face | spread by mosquitoes and sick birds: vaccinate |
| Worms | thin birds, fewer eggs | clean house; deworming medicine |
| Lice and mites | birds scratch, lose feathers and lay fewer eggs | clean house; treatment from the vet |
Why records? Suppose you sell 300 eggs at 100 Frw each: 300 × 100 = 30,000 Frw. If the feed cost 20,000 Frw, you made 30,000 − 20,000 = 10,000 Frw. Records also warn you early: if the hens suddenly lay fewer eggs, something is wrong.

Which chicken disease is caused by a virus, spreads very fast and has no cure?
Answer: Newcastle disease. It is prevented by vaccination.
Young chicks on wet litter have bloody droppings. What disease could it be, and what should the farmer do?
Answer: Coccidiosis. Keep the litter dry and clean, and get medicine from the vet.
What should you do with a chicken that has died of a disease?
Answer: Bury it deep or burn it.
Uwase sold 200 eggs at 100 Frw each and spent 12,000 Frw on feed. How much money did she have left?
Answer: 200 × 100 = 20,000 Frw; 20,000 − 12,000 = 8,000 Frw.
Why should a chicken farmer keep records?
Answer: To know whether the farm makes money, and to notice problems early, such as hens laying fewer eggs.
