Grand-père opens an old cupboard. He takes out something big and round.
Byiringiro has never seen one like it. He asks: « Qu’est-ce que c’est ? »
Byiringiro : « Grand-père, qu’est-ce que c’est ? »
Grand-père : « C’est un tambour. En kinyarwanda, c’est une ingoma. »
Byiringiro : « Et ça, c’est quoi ? »
Grand-père : « C’est un panier. C’est un agaseke. »
Byiringiro : « C’est beau ! »
Et ça ? means and this? C’est beau ! means it is beautiful!
Ask what someone is doing: Qu’est-ce que tu fais ? With friends: Tu fais quoi ?
Answer: Je chante. (I am singing.) Je lis. (I am reading.) Je joue. (I am playing.)

Fire is hot and strong. Never play with fire!
Say what a thing does. Your friend guesses. For example:
« Ça brûle. Ça cuit. Ça donne de la lumière. Qu’est-ce que c’est ? »
« C’est le feu ! »
Say quoi: kwa. You heard this sound in Unit 1: bonsoir (bon-swar). And in trois: trwa.
A big person hides a thing in a bag. Put your hand in. Feel it and ask « Qu’est-ce que c’est ? ».
Guess: « C’est un ballon ? ». Then take it out and see!
Tip
A person or a thing? For a person, ask qui. For a thing, ask quoi, or qu’est-ce que c’est.

Answer: C’est qui ? Keza is a person.
Your friend is jumping. Ask what she is doing, the short way.
Answer: Tu fais quoi ?
Riddle: « Ça brûle. Ça cuit. Ça donne de la chaleur. Qu’est-ce que c’est ? »
Answer: C’est le feu !
