Where Things Are, and Lines
Lesson 1 of 3
10 min
Let's begin
Uwase, Mugisha and Keza line up at the school gate.
The teacher asks who is in the middle.
Three hands go up. Three children point at the wrong place.
Today you will say exactly where a thing is.
Where is the ball? You cannot just say in front.
In front of what? You must name the other thing.
Say it like this: the ball is in front of Mugisha.
One thing. One place word. One more thing.
A place word always joins two things together.
Uwase, Mugisha and Keza stand in one line. All three look at the gate.
| front | middle | back |
|---|---|---|
| Uwase | Mugisha | Keza |
Uwase is at the front of the line. Keza is at the back.
Uwase is in front of Mugisha.
Keza is behind Mugisha.
Mugisha is between Uwase and Keza.
Between means in the middle of two things. Name both of them.
Keza puts her book on the desk. The book touches the desk.
The roof is above her head. It does not touch her.
Her bag is under the desk. Under means below it.
The jerrycan is next to the door. It is right beside the door.
The window is near the door. It is close, but not beside it.
Mugisha faces the gate. The tree is in front of him.
Now Mugisha turns around.
The tree is behind him now.
He did not move the tree. He moved his own body.
So look which way a person is facing. Then say the place word.
A song for in front of, behind and between.
Watch a toy move in front of, behind and between two boxes.
Tip
Name both things, every time
Never stop at the ball is in front.
