Lesson 1 of 8
10 min
Let's begin
Uwase helps her mama after supper. She lines up the empty bottles on the mat.
Then she looks for a cap for every bottle. One bottle is left with no cap at all.
Today you will match things one for each.
Matching means one for each. One cap for one bottle.
Put the bottles in a row. Put one cap under each bottle.
Start at one end. Do not skip any bottle. Do not give two caps to one bottle.
Here is the mat that Uwase made:
| Bottles | bottle | bottle | bottle | bottle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caps | cap | cap | cap | no cap |
One bottle sits with no partner. That bottle is the extra one.
Matching tells you who has more. You do not count at all.
The caps ran out first. So there are fewer caps.
The bottles did not run out. So there are more bottles.
Sometimes nothing is left over. Every thing has a partner. Then the two groups are the same.
Careful! A long row can trick your eyes. Big gaps do not make more things.
So match them first. Then your eyes cannot trick you.
Tip
One for each, then look
Lay the two groups in two rows. Put one thing under one thing.
Whatever is left with no partner is the extra one.
A song: match one to one and see who has more
Use real stones and caps. Then tap Show answer to check.
Put out a row of stones. Put one cap under each stone. Nothing is left over. Which group has more?
Answer: Neither group. They are the same. Every stone found a partner.
Keza gives one spoon to each cup. Two spoons are left over. Which group has fewer?
Answer: The cups. The cups ran out first.
Mugisha gives one banana to each friend. One friend gets nothing. Are there more friends or more bananas?
Answer: More friends. One friend had no partner.
Two rows of beans. Every bean in the top row has a bean below it. Nothing is left over. Which row has more?
Answer: Neither row. The rows are the same.
Now do it at home. Take your pencils and your exercise books. Give one pencil to each book.
Answer: Look at what is left over. Nothing left over means they are the same.
