Let's begin
Keza sits on a mat with a pile of bottle caps.
She counts them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then she stops.
There are still more caps on the mat.
Today you will count 6 and 7.
Hold up one whole hand. That is 5 fingers.
Now put up 1 finger on your other hand.
Count on: 5... 6. You are holding up 6 fingers.
Draw 2 rows of 5 boxes in your book. This is a ten frame.
Fill the top row with beans. Put 1 bean below.

The top row is full. That is 5.
One bean sits below. 5 and 1 more make 6.
Fill the top row again. Now put 2 beans below.

Touch each bean as you say a number.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. There are 7 beans.
Careful! Do not start at 1 every time.
A full top row is always 5. Say 5, then count on: 6, 7.
Mugisha counts 6 chairs in his classroom.
Umutoni counts 7 avocados in a basket.
The last number you say tells you how many there are.
Now look for 7 things in your own home.
Count 7 bottle caps. Count 7 sticks. Count 7 steps to the door.
Each time you stop on the same word: seven.
Put 6 beans in one ten frame. Put 7 beans in another.
The frame with 7 has one more bean below.
7 comes after 6 when you count. So 7 is bigger.
Tip
Fill the top row first
A full top row is always 5.
Then count on the beans below: 6, 7.
Lost your place? Start again. One touch, one number.
