Let's begin
Mugisha counts bottle caps behind his mama's shop.
He ties them in bundles of ten. He counts 6 full bundles and no loose caps.
“Sixty!” says his mama. Mugisha writes 16 on his slate.
Today you will keep sixteen (16) and sixty (60) apart for good.
50 is 5 full bundles of ten.
Add one loose stick. Now you have 51.
Say these out loud with me:
51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59
Nine loose sticks. Tie one more on.
6 bundles and no loose sticks is 60.
Start the loose sticks again.
61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69
One more stick makes 7 bundles. That is 70.
Point at each number and say it:

Every ten works the same way.
Some number words sound alike. Listen well.
Sixteen (16) is 1 ten and 6 loose ones. It is small.
Sixty (60) is 6 whole bundles. It is much bigger.
Teen means one ten and some ones. Teen always stays under 20.
The ending -ty means many tens.
Careful! Seventeen (17) is 1 ten and 7 ones. Seventy (70) is 7 whole bundles.
Worked example
sixty-four.
Step 1 Sixty is 6 tens. Write 6.
Step 2 Four is 4 ones. Write 4 beside it.
Step 3 You have written 64.
Now try fifty-eight. 5 tens, then 8 ones. That is 58.

Count sixty out loud: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60.
Sixteen is only one bundle and 6 loose caps.
