Drawing: Lines, Shapes and Everyday Things
Lesson 7 of 8
12 min
Let's begin
Habimana puts his exercise book, his pencil and his ruler on the mat.
He wants to draw them, so he starts with the letters on the cover.
Soon there is no room left for the book.
Today you will start the other way round.
Every object is made of simple shapes added together.
Find the big shape first and draw it lightly with your pencil.
Then add the small parts inside it.
Step 1 Draw a long, thin rectangle. That is the body.
Step 2 Add a small triangle on one end. That is the sharp point.
Step 3 Draw one short line across the triangle to show the wood.
Step 4 Colour the body yellow and leave the point white.
So a pencil is a rectangle plus a triangle.
Step 1 Draw a big rectangle for the cover.
Step 2 Draw a thin rectangle down one side for the spine.
Step 3 Last of all, add a few short lines for the writing.
Step 4 Colour the cover blue.
Careful! The writing comes last. If you draw it first you will run out of room for the book.
A ruler is one long rectangle. Add small marks along one edge.
A piece of chalk is a short, fat rectangle. Leave it white.
While you draw, tell somebody what you are doing.
First the big rectangle. Then the small triangle. Then the colour.
Saying the steps helps your hand remember them.
Tip
Big shape first. Small parts after
Look at the real thing for a long time before your pencil moves.
Start with the small bits and you will run out of room.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
