Drawing: Lines, Shapes and Everyday Things
Lesson 6 of 8
11 min
Let's begin
Gatete is colouring a mango with a red crayon.
He works fast and the colour runs off the edge.
Now his mango has a fuzzy red cloud around it.
Today you will learn which tool does which job.
Pick up your pencil.
A pencil makes a thin, light line, and you can rub it out.
The line round the outside of your drawing is called the outline.
Always draw the outline with a pencil. Press lightly.
Now pick up a crayon.
A crayon is thick and soft. It fills the space inside the outline.
Move it in small strokes, all going the same way.
Press the same amount everywhere. That is called even pressure.
Careful! Many children outline with a crayon and colour with a pencil. Then the edge goes fuzzy and the whole picture looks grey. Pencil for lines. Crayon for colour.
Slow hand. Small strokes. Stop at the line.
When you get near the outline, go slower still.
A neat picture is not a fast picture. Nobody wins a race here.
Look at the real object first, for a long time.
A leaf is green. A spoon is grey. Charcoal is black.
Use the crayons you already have: red, blue, yellow, green, black.
Then put each crayon back in its place when you finish with it.
Step 1 Draw the outline of the leaf with your pencil, pressing lightly.
Step 2 Pick the green crayon, because a leaf is green.
Step 3 Fill the middle first, with small strokes going one way.
Step 4 Slow right down and finish neatly at the pencil line.
