Drawing: Lines, Shapes and Everyday Things
Lesson 3 of 8
11 min
Let's begin
Rain is coming. Keza watches the sky from the doorway.
Lightning cracks across the clouds, sharp and pointy.
After the rain a rainbow comes, smooth and bending.
Two lines, and they are not the same at all.
A zigzag goes up, then down, then up again.
Every turn is a sharp corner.
Lightning is a zigzag. The steps up to a door are a zigzag.
Look at the teeth of a comb. Zigzag.
Draw one now: up, down, up, down, without lifting your pencil.
A curved line bends, but it never has a corner.
Run your finger along it. Your finger never stops to turn.
A rainbow is curved. The handle of a cup is curved.
The handle of a jerrycan is curved. The top of a banana is curved.
Careful! Many children call every bendy line a zigzag. Ask one question: could this line prick my finger? A zigzag has sharp corners. A curve is smooth.
Step 1 The teeth of a comb. Sharp corners, so zigzag.
Step 2 A cup handle. Smooth bend, so curved.
Step 3 The steps up to the door. Sharp corners, so zigzag.
Step 4 A rainbow. Smooth bend, so curved.
Step 5 The edge of a plate. Smooth bend, so curved.
Three curved and two zigzag. Count them again yourself.
Draw a zigzag right across the top of your page.
Under it, draw a curved line across the page.
Now touch each one slowly with your finger and feel the difference.
A song that draws each kind of line: up, across, leaning, zigzag and curved.
Tip
Zigzag pricks. Curved is smooth
Close your eyes and run one finger along the line in your head.
If your finger must stop and turn sharply, it is a zigzag.
