Drawing: Lines, Shapes and Everyday Things
Lesson 2 of 8
11 min
Let's begin
Mugisha stands very straight beside the flagpole at school.
He says he is as tall and as straight as the pole.
Then he lies his arm flat along the table.
Today you will learn the names of those two lines.
Stand up tall. Do not bend.
You are a vertical line.
A vertical line goes straight up and straight down.
The flagpole is vertical. A tree trunk is vertical.
The long side edge of a door is vertical.
Now lay your arm flat on the table.
Your arm is a horizontal line.
A horizontal line goes straight across, lying flat.
The top edge of the table is horizontal. The floor is horizontal.
Careful! Horizontal is the longer word, so many children give it to the tall line. That is the wrong way round. Horizontal lies down to sleep.
Go and look at a real door.
Step 1 The two long side edges go up and down. They are vertical.
Step 2 The top edge goes straight across. It is horizontal.
Step 3 So a door is two vertical lines and two horizontal lines.
Take your pencil. Draw one line from the top of the page down to the bottom.
That is vertical.
Draw one line from the left side across to the right side.
That is horizontal.
They cross in the middle and make a plus sign.
Tip
Horizontal lies down. Vertical stands up
Say it while you move your body. Stand tall for vertical. Lay your arm flat for horizontal.
If the line looks like it is sleeping, it is horizontal.
