My Family Members
Lesson 3 of 4
11 min
Let's begin
Umutoni and Byiringiro stand side by side at the door. Byiringiro is taller. His head reaches the lock.
Their aunt asks them one question. Who is the elder one?
Byiringiro points at himself. He is wrong. Today you will learn why.
Elder does not mean tall. Elder does not mean big.
Elder means born first.
Young means born after.
Umutoni was born first. Byiringiro came two years later.
So Umutoni is the elder sister. Byiringiro is the young brother.
Careful! The tallest child is not always the elder child.
The father and the mother are husband and wife.
Together we call them the parents.
The boys and girls born to them are the children.
A boy in your family is your brother.
A girl in your family is your sister.
Worked example
the children in Keza's home.
Step 1 Ishimwe was born first.
Step 2 Keza was born after Ishimwe.
Step 3 The baby was born last of all.
Ishimwe is Keza's elder brother.
Keza is Ishimwe's young sister.
The baby is the youngest child in that home.
Height did not help one single time. Only birth order did.
Tip
First to be born is elder
