Let's begin
Uwase has three crayons on her desk: blue, yellow and green.
Her teacher says, "Now colour the flag of Rwanda." Uwase looks at her paper and waits. Which colour goes on top?
After today you will always know.
Our flag has three stripes, one under the other.
Blue is at the top. Yellow is in the middle. Green is at the bottom.
Say the order out loud: blue, yellow, green.
Now think of outside. The sky is high above you. Sunshine comes under it. The grass is down at your feet.
In the blue stripe there is a yellow sun with long rays.
It is not in the middle of the flag. It is in the top right corner.
Hold up your right hand. The sun belongs on that side, up high.
The sun is yellow, the same yellow as the middle stripe.
So the flag still has only three colours.
If you colour green at the top, that is not our flag.
The order is the whole secret: blue, yellow, green, always from the top down.
Other flags have three stripes too. Some even use the same colours.
So ask two questions. Is blue on top? Is there a yellow sun in the top right corner?
If both answers are yes, that flag is Rwanda's.
At schools, at hospitals and health posts, and at government offices.

Sky, sun, grass
Look up, then straight ahead, then down at your feet. That is blue, yellow, green.

Answer: blue. Blue is the sky, and the sky is up high.
Which colour is at the bottom?
Answer: green. Green is the grass at your feet.
Where is the yellow sun?
Answer: in the top right corner, inside the blue stripe.
How many colours does our flag have?
Answer: three. The sun is yellow too, so it is not a new colour.
Draw three stripes and colour them. Then check your work.
Answer: blue on top, yellow in the middle, green at the bottom, and a yellow sun in the top right corner.
