Our Surroundings
Lesson 1 of 4
10 min
Let's begin
Mugisha stands in his doorway in the morning.
He sees banana trees and a narrow red path.
He sees a goat, a hen and his neighbour carrying water.
Today you will learn the name for all of that.
Your environment is everything around you.
The trees are in it. The grass is in it.
Houses, animals, water and the sky are in it.
The people near you are in it too.
Things you made are in it, like the fence and the path.
Things nobody made are in it, like the hills and the rain.
Now stand at your own door. Look out slowly.
Name five things you can see. Say them out loud.
Worked example
Uwase stands at her door.
Step 1 She looks down. She sees the swept yard.
Step 2 She looks up. She sees the mango tree.
Step 3 She looks around. She sees a hen, the fence and her neighbour's house.
Those five things are part of Uwase's environment.
Careful! The environment is not only a big forest far away.
Some children think it must be tall trees and wild animals.
Your swept yard is your environment. So is your classroom.
So is the road you walk on, and the tap you drink from.
Mugisha's environment is his yard. Yours is your own yard.
You cannot step outside your environment. You are always in it.

Tip
Stand at your door and look
Everything you can see is your environment.
Point with your finger and count: one... two... three...
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the environment?
Answer: everything around us. Not only trees, and not only our house.
Keza sees a goat, a tree and a tap. Are those part of her environment?
Answer: yes. All three are around her, so all three are in it.
Is your classroom part of your environment?
Answer: yes. Your school is around you, so it counts.
Name two things in your environment that nobody made.
Answer: the hills and the rain. The sun and the wind are good answers too.
Go and stand in your doorway now. Name five things you can see.
Answer: your own five. Say each one out loud as you point at it.
