Our Surroundings
Lesson 2 of 4
11 min
Let's begin
It is early morning and Keza is awake.
She takes the grass broom and sweeps the yard.
The goat by the fence watches her and bleats.
Today you will name everything around a home.
Walk slowly around your house and look.
You may see trees, flowers and grass.
You may see a water tap and a dustbin.
You may see a fence, a path and a small garden.
Your neighbours live close by. They are part of it too.
Many homes keep animals in the yard.
A cow, a goat, a dog, a cat, some hens.
These are domestic animals. We keep them, so we care for them.
Give them food. Give them clean water. Give them shade.
Habimana ties his goat where the grass is green. That is good care.
The open ground around your house is called the compound.
Keza sweeps the compound before she eats.
Dirt on the ground brings flies.
Flies sit on the dirt. Then flies sit on your food.
Then your stomach hurts and you stay home from school.
Careful! We do not sweep just so visitors will like our yard.
We sweep so the flies go away and we stay well.
You are not too young to help at home.
You can sweep a small part of the yard.
You can pick up papers and put them in the dustbin.
You can water the flowers and feed the hens.

Tip
Sweep the dirt, sweep the flies
Where there is no dirt, the flies have nothing to sit on.
Say it while you sweep, and the broom feels lighter.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
Name three things you can see around a house.
Answer: trees, a fence and a dustbin. Flowers, grass and a tap are good too.
Which of these is a domestic animal: a goat or a lion?
Answer: a goat. We keep goats at home and we feed them.
Why do we sweep the compound every day?
Answer: dirt brings flies, and flies bring sickness. A swept yard keeps us well.
Niyonzima's dog has no water in its bowl. What should he do?
Answer: fill the bowl with clean water. We care for the animals we keep.
Choose one job you will do at home today.
Answer: your own. Sweeping, picking up papers or watering the flowers all count.
