Our School
Lesson 4 of 5
40 min
A visitor has come to Kabeza Primary School. The head teacher asks Umutoni, a Primary 4 pupil, to show her around. Umutoni is proud. She knows every corner of her school!
Today you will read Umutoni's tour. Then you will learn to say how big your school is and where each place is.
Welcome to Kabeza Primary School! My name is Umutoni and I am in Primary 4. Let me show you around.
Our school is quite big. There are 16 classrooms. There are about 900 pupils and 24 teachers. The classrooms are in two long blocks with iron roofs.
This is the gate. The head teacher's office is next to the gate, and the library is on the other side of the gate. So the gate is between the office and the library. The library is small, but it has many storybooks.
In the middle of the compound, there is a tall flagpole. Every Monday morning we stand around it and sing our national anthem, Rwanda Nziza. Classroom Block A and Classroom Block B are opposite each other, and the flagpole is between them.
The playground is at the back of the school, behind the flagpole. We play football and netball there at break. The kitchen is next to the playground. That is where the cooks make our porridge and lunch. The toilets are on the other side of the playground, and there is a handwashing tap in front of them.
I love my school because it is clean and green. Every Friday afternoon, our class sweeps the classroom and waters the trees.

Use there is for one thing and there are for many things: There is a flagpole. There are 24 teachers.
To compare two schools, use bigger than or smaller than: Our school has 16 classrooms. My cousin's school has 22. My cousin's school is bigger than our school.
A plan is a drawing of a place seen from above, like a bird looking down. Here is a simple plan of Kabeza Primary School:
| Kitchen | Playground | Toilets |
| Classroom Block A | Flagpole | Classroom Block B |
| Office | Gate | Library |
Draw a plan of your own school as a grid of boxes, like the one above.
Write five sentences about it: how many classrooms there are, and where three places are. Use next to, between, opposite and behind.
Speak: Be a tour guide! Show a friend around your plan: “Welcome to our school. This is the gate. The office is next to it …”
