Say these two words slowly: school … book. Both words have the letters oo. But do they sound the same? Listen again.
In school, the sound is long, like a cow saying “moooo”. In book, it is short and quick. Today you will learn to hear and spell both sounds.
Make your lips round and hold the sound: oo-oo-oo.

Say it quickly: oo!

Words in the same family share their ending, so if you can spell one, you can spell them all.

A few oo words break the rule. Learn them by heart:
Look, look! A good book!
Take it to your room at noon.
Read it by the light of the moon,
And you'll finish it soon, soon, soon!
The short oo words are look, good, book. The long oo words are room, noon, moon, soon.
Speak: Read the chant aloud with a friend. Clap once every time you say a long oo word.
Write: Draw two boxes in your exercise book, long oo and short oo. Write five words in each box. Then write two sentences about your school, each with two oo words. Example: I read a good book in the school library.
Tip
Moo or oops? If the oo is long like a cow's “moo” (school, food), it is the long sound. If it is short like “oops!” (book, look), it is the short sound.
