Lesson 5 of 5
30 min
Put your finger on your lips and say “Shh!” Now pretend to be a train: “Choo-choo!” These are two different sounds, and you hear them in lots of words about jobs at home: wash, dish, chores, kitchen, fetch.
Today you will learn to hear and spell sh, ch and tch.
Soft and long, like wind: shhh.
shop, shoe, sheep, shelf, shirt, wash, dish, brush, fish, finish
Short and strong, like a sneeze: ch!
chair, chicken, children, chores, cheese, teacher, bench, lunch, much, church
After a short vowel at the end of a word, the ch sound is often spelt tch. The t is silent!
fetch, catch, match, watch, stitch
You also find tch inside a word: kitchen.
I fetch water. We watch the football match.
Wash the dish and brush the shoe,
Fetch the water, feed the chickens too!
Sweep the kitchen, dust the chair,
Children's chores are everywhere!
sh words: wash, dish, brush, shoe. ch and tch words: fetch, chickens, kitchen, chair, children's, chores.
Speak: Say the chant with a friend. Put your finger on your lips for every sh word, and move your arm like a train for every ch word.
