Jobs and Roles in Home and Community
Lesson 4 of 5
40 min
Next Friday is clean-up day at school. Teacher Habimana writes on the board: “What will you do?” Everyone wants a job. “I'll water the trees!” shouts Gatete. “We'll wash the windows!” say Keza and Uwase.
Today you will read the class plan and learn to talk about future activities with will.
Next Friday, our class will clean the school compound. We will start at two o'clock, after lunch.
Mutesi and Ishimwe will pick up litter around the playground. Gatete will water the young trees near the gate. Keza, Uwase and I will wash the classroom windows. Byiringiro will sweep the path to the toilets.
Teacher Habimana will bring buckets, brooms and gloves. We will wear the gloves when we pick up litter, so we won't cut our hands on broken glass.
We won't burn the rubbish, because smoke is bad for our lungs. We will put it in the rubbish pit.
After the work, we will wash our hands, sing songs and share bananas. It will be a great day!
— Niyonzima, Primary 4
When will the class start the clean-up?
At two o'clock, after lunch, next Friday.
What will Gatete do?
He will water the young trees near the gate.
Why will the pupils wear gloves?
So they won't cut their hands on broken glass.
Why won't they burn the rubbish? Is this a good decision?
Because smoke is bad for our lungs. Yes, it keeps everyone healthy.
Use will + verb to talk about things that will happen in the future. Will is the same for everyone:
Short forms: I will = I'll, we will = we'll, will not = won't.
Saying no: We won't burn the rubbish.
Asking: put will first.
Teacher: Will you help on Friday?
Gatete: Yes, I will.
Teacher: Will Byiringiro wash the windows?
Gatete: No, he won't. He'll sweep the path.
When you decide to help right now, say I'll:
tomorrow, next Friday, next week, soon, later, after lunch
will or going to? You already know going to for plans you have made. Will is great for promises, offers and saying who will do each job.
Write a plan for a clean-up day at your home or school. Give a job to four people, and add one thing you won't do. Use will in every sentence.
Speak: Role-play offers with a friend. Your friend says a problem (“My books are falling!”) and you offer help with I'll … (“I'll help you pick them up!”).
Tip
WILL + verb, the same for everyone: I will, you will, she will, they will.
No? Say won't. Helping right now? Say I'll!
Write your answers in your exercise book, then check.
