Every year Kigali welcomes visitors from many countries: sportspeople, musicians, students, business people. This August, a football tournament for under-13 teams from East Africa is taking place at a stadium in Kigali.
Ishimwe plays for the Rwandan team. Before the first match, he meets players from other countries. How do they say where they come from?
Ishimwe : « Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Ishimwe. J'habite à Kigali, au Rwanda. Et toi, comment tu t'appelles ? »
Ishimwe : « Super ! Nous sommes tous voisins ! Et le garçon là-bas ? »
Aisha : « C'est Paul. Il vient de Montréal, au Canada. Son père travaille à Kigali. »
Ishimwe : « Bienvenue à tous ! Allez, on joue ? »
Ailleurs means somewhere else. Bienvenue means welcome.
| French | English | French | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| le Rwanda | Rwanda | la France | France |
| le Burundi | Burundi | la Belgique | Belgium |
| l'Ouganda | Uganda | le Sénégal | Senegal |
| la Tanzanie | Tanzania | le Canada | Canada |
| la République démocratique du Congo (la RDC) | the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) | le Maroc | Morocco |
| le Kenya | Kenya | les États-Unis | the United States |
To say in or to a country, French uses three different words. It depends on the country's gender:
| The country is… | Use | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| masculine (le) | au | au Rwanda, au Burundi, au Kenya, au Canada, au Sénégal |
| feminine (la) | en | en Tanzanie, en France, en Belgique, en République démocratique du Congo |
| masculine, starting with a vowel (l') | en | en Ouganda |
| plural (les) | aux | aux États-Unis |
For a town, always use à: à Kigali, à Kampala, à Bujumbura, à Montréal.
How do you know the gender? Most countries that end in -e are feminine: la Tanzanie, la France, la Belgique. Most others are masculine: le Rwanda, le Kenya, le Maroc. Watch out for one neighbour of Tanzania: le Mozambique ends in -e but is masculine, so it is au Mozambique.
Play with a partner. One of you names a country from the table: « la Belgique ! ». The other makes a sentence as fast as possible: « J'habite en Belgique ! ». Then swap. Next, say where three people you know live: Ma tante habite à Rubavu, au Rwanda.
Tip
Town, then country. Say it like an address, from small to big: à + the town, then au, en or aux + the country: Je viens de Bukavu, en RDC. J'habite à Huye, au Rwanda.
