Les pays et les nationalités
Lesson 4 of 4
40 min
Gatete's school in Huye has a partner school in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. In Senegal, many people speak French. Today the two classes meet by video call, and every pupil talks to a new friend.
Gatete is nervous. What should he say first? Name, age, country, nationality, languages: let's practise!
Awa : « Bonjour ! Comment tu t'appelles ? »
Gatete : « Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Gatete. Et toi ? »
Awa : « Je m'appelle Awa. Quel âge as-tu ? »
Gatete : « J'ai douze ans. Et toi ? »
Awa : « Moi aussi, j'ai douze ans ! D'où viens-tu ? »
Gatete : « Je viens du Rwanda. J'habite à Huye, au sud du pays. Je suis rwandais. Et toi, quelle est ta nationalité ? »
Awa : « Je suis sénégalaise. J'habite à Dakar. Quelles langues parles-tu ? »
Gatete : « Je parle kinyarwanda, anglais et un peu français. Et toi ? »
Awa : « Moi, je parle wolof et français. Au revoir, Gatete ! À bientôt ! »
Gatete : « Au revoir, Awa ! À la semaine prochaine ! »
| Question | Answer | English |
|---|---|---|
| Comment tu t'appelles ? | Je m'appelle Gatete. | What is your name? |
| Quel âge as-tu ? | J'ai douze ans. | How old are you? |
| D'où viens-tu ? | Je viens du Rwanda. | Where do you come from? |
| Où habites-tu ? | J'habite à Huye. | Where do you live? |
| Quelle est ta nationalité ? | Je suis rwandais. | What is your nationality? |
| Quelles langues parles-tu ? | Je parle kinyarwanda et anglais. | Which languages do you speak? |
Careful with age: in English you say I AM twelve, but in French you HAVE your years: J'ai douze ans. Never say je suis douze. And don't forget the word ans (years).
Quel means which or what. It copies the noun that comes after it:
| Masculine | Feminine | |
|---|---|---|
| singular | quel âge, quel pays | quelle nationalité, quelle ville |
| plural | quels sports | quelles langues |
Good news: all four forms sound exactly the same! You only see the difference when you write.
Make 12 small cards. On each card, write a first name, a town and a country, for example Wanjiru, Nairobi, le Kenya or Paul, Montréal, le Canada. Put the cards face down. Pick one card and BECOME that person. Your partner asks you the questions in the table, and you answer: « Je m'appelle Wanjiru. J'ai onze ans. Je viens de Nairobi, au Kenya. Je suis kényane. Je parle swahili et anglais. » Then swap.
Fill in your own information card and write it as a short text of five sentences: Nom, prénom, âge, ville, pays, nationalité, langues.
Tip
In French, you HAVE your age. Imagine your years are things you carry in a bag: J'ai douze ans, I have twelve years. Every birthday, one more year goes into your bag!
Ask a new friend his age.
Answer: Quel âge as-tu ?
Correct the mistake: Je suis onze ans.
Answer: J'ai onze ans.
Quel or quelle? ___ est ta ville ?
Answer: Quelle (la ville is feminine).
Which languages does Awa speak?
Answer: Elle parle wolof et français.
