Mugisha wants to organise a football match after school. He needs players! Some friends say yes at once, one friend cannot come, and one friend does not want to play football at all.
Let's learn how to invite, accept and say no politely in French.
Mugisha : Salut Ishimwe !
Tu as un sifflet ?
Habimana : Oui ! À tout à l'heure !
| To… | French | English |
|---|---|---|
| invite | Tu veux jouer avec nous ? Tu viens ? On joue au volley-ball ? | Do you want to play with us? Are you coming? Shall we play volleyball? |
| accept | Oui, d'accord ! Avec plaisir ! Bonne idée ! Je veux bien ! | Yes, OK! With pleasure! Good idea! I'd love to! |
| say no politely | Désolé (Désolée), je ne peux pas. Non merci. Une autre fois, peut-être. | Sorry, I can't. No thank you. Another time, maybe. |
| give a reason | Je dois aller à l'entraînement. Je préfère lire. | I have to go to training. I prefer reading. |
| ask when and where | À quelle heure ? Où ? | At what time? Where? |
| say goodbye | À tout à l'heure ! À demain ! | See you later! See you tomorrow! |
More words: l'arbitre (the referee), un sifflet (a whistle), le terrain de l'école (the school pitch).
These three verbs are followed by a verb in the infinitive: « Tu veux jouer ? » « Je ne peux pas venir. » « Je dois aller à l'entraînement. »
| vouloir (to want) | pouvoir (can, to be able to) | devoir (must, to have to) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | je veux | je peux | je dois |
| tu | tu veux | tu peux | tu dois |
| il, elle, on | il veut | il peut | il doit |
| nous | nous voulons | nous pouvons | nous devons |
| vous | vous voulez | vous pouvez | vous devez |
| ils, elles | ils veulent | ils peuvent | ils doivent |
In the negative, ne … pas goes around the first verb only: « Je ne peux pas venir. » « Il ne veut pas jouer. »
Work in pairs. Student A invites Student B to a sport or a hobby and gives the time and the place. Student B accepts, or says no politely and gives a reason. Then swap. For example:
A : Tu veux jouer à l'igisoro dimanche, chez mon grand-père ?
B : Désolé, je ne peux pas. Je dois aller chez ma tante. Une autre fois, peut-être !
Then ask each other: « Quel est ton sport préféré ? Pourquoi ? Tu fais du sport combien de fois par semaine ? »

Tip
The x twins. With je and tu, vouloir and pouvoir end in -x: je veux, tu veux, je peux, tu peux. With il and elle they end in -t: il veut, elle peut. You don't hear the x or the t, so look carefully when you write.
How does Keza say no?

Why can't Keza come?
