My Village and Its Leaders
Lesson 3 of 3
10 min
Let's begin
It is Saturday morning. Byiringiro hears someone calling from the path.
Neighbours come out with hoes and brooms. His papa picks up a hoe too and goes with them.
Somebody called all these people. Today you will learn who leads a village.
Every village has a leader.
Some people call this leader the village chief.
Other people say the village coordinator.
Both names mean the same person.
A village leader can be a woman or a man.
The leader does not work alone. Four people help:
Worked example
a problem in Habimana's village.
Step 1 Two neighbours quarrel about a goat that ate some beans.
Step 2 They walk to their village leader, Mutesi, and sit down.
Step 3 She listens to one. Then she listens to the other.
Step 4 She helps the two neighbours agree.
Leaders also call people to meetings. They ask everyone to keep the village clean and safe.
Careful! A village leader is not there to punish you.
The first work of a leader is to listen. The next work is to help.
We greet our leaders. We answer them politely.

Tip
A leader listens first
Picture a big ear, not a big chair.
A good leader listens to both people before saying anything.
