Keeping Clean
Lesson 3 of 4
11 min
Let's begin
Byiringiro rinses his hands under the jerrycan tap.
The water runs off, but the dirt stays on his skin.
His sister puts the bar of soap in his hand.
Today you will name the things that keep us clean.
Water alone slides over dirt.
Soap grabs the dirt and the germs and lifts them off your skin.
Then the water carries them away.
Rub with soap slowly while you count to twenty.
Sometimes the jerrycan is empty and the tap is dry.
Then you rub a little hand sanitizer on your hands.
Careful! Sanitizer helps, but soap and water are still best.
Hang the towel in the sun so it dries.
Keep your own toothbrush. Never use somebody else's.
Put the soap back in its dish, not in the mud.
Niyonzima washed with water only. His hands still smelt of goat.
He went back, took the soap and rubbed well.
This time his hands were really clean.
Tip
Water rinses. Soap removes
Say it while you wash: soap first, then the water takes it all away.
If you used water only, the dirt is still sitting on your hands.
