Living in Harmony
Lesson 3 of 4
10 min
Let's begin
Every morning you pass a neighbour at the gate.
You say good morning. She smiles and answers you.
That small greeting is peace. Today you will learn that peace is something people keep.
Peace is not a thing you buy once and keep for ever.
People keep peace by how they treat each other every day.
They greet. They share. They talk when they disagree.
When people stop doing those things, peace gets thin.
1. Greet everybody, not only your own friends.
2. Let the child with nobody to play with join your game.
3. When you are cross, use words and not hands.
Do those three every day and your class stays a good place to be.
Our country has known a time when people did not live in harmony.
It happened in 1994. It is called the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Many families were hurt very much. It was a very sad time for Rwanda.
Today Rwanda chooses peace. People live as one. They care for everyone, not only for their own family.
Unkindness starts small. It starts with a name, a laugh, a child left out of the game.
So peace starts small too. It starts with a greeting, a shared bench, a turn given away.
You are old enough to give those every day.
Do you want to know more about this part of our country's story? Ask a grown-up at home. They will tell you what you are ready to hear.
Tip
Peace is built every day
Think of peace like a swept yard. If nobody sweeps, the dust comes back.
Your broom is your kind words.
