Politeness
Lesson 1 of 4
10 min
Let's begin
Uwase is sweeping the yard before supper.
Someone calls at the gate. It is her aunt!
Uwase drops the broom and hides behind the door.
Today you will learn what to do instead.
A visitor is someone who comes to see your family.
It may be an aunt, a neighbour or a friend.
Being kind and nice to people is called politeness.
A visitor feels happy in a home where people are polite.
Do three things when a visitor comes.
Step 1 Look up and smile.
Step 2 Say Welcome! in a clear voice.
Step 3 Bring a chair or a mat and say, Please sit down.
Then go and call a grown-up in your home.
You can bring water too. Visitors often walk a long way.
Use quiet, kind words while the visitor is with you.
Do not shout. Do not run through the room.
When the visitor leaves, stand up and say Goodbye.
Careful! Do not hide or run to your room.
A child can welcome a visitor too. You do not have to wait for a grown-up.
A visitor is glad to be met by a child.
A seat and a smile cost you nothing at all.
But the visitor carries them home.
One day you will be the visitor at somebody else's gate.
You will be glad when a child there smiles at you.

Keza runs to the bedroom when a visitor arrives. Is that polite?
Answer: no. Keza should stay, smile and say welcome.

Answer: water. A tired visitor is glad to drink.
The visitor is going home now. What do you say?
