Politeness
Lesson 2 of 4
11 min
Let's begin
The plates are out on the mat. Beans and rice tonight.
Mugisha is very hungry. He reaches out first.
But his young sister has no food on her plate yet.
Today you will learn good manners at the table.
First wash your hands with soap and water.
Then sit down quietly at the table or on the mat.
Wait until everybody has food on their plate.
Then you all start together.
Careful! Being hungry is not a reason to start first. Everybody is hungry.
You want the salt. Do not stretch your arm over the food.
Say, Please pass the salt.
Someone passes it to you. Say Thank you.
Those two words work at every meal, every day.
Keep your lips together while you chew.
Do not talk while there is food in your mouth.
Swallow first. Then speak.
Eat slowly, and do not grab the biggest piece.
Somebody offers you more food. You are full.
Say No, thank you.
Saying only no sounds hard. Two small words make it kind.
These manners work at home on the mat.
They work at school and at a friend's house too.
When you finish, say thank you for the food.
Then carry your own plate away to be washed.
Tip
Wait, ask, chew quietly
Wait for everybody. Ask with please. Chew with your lips closed.
