Our Family Property
Lesson 3 of 5
11 min
Let's begin
Mutesi folds her uniform and puts it on her own shelf.
Then she helps wash the big cooking pot that everyone at home eats from.
On the way to school she passes the water tap the whole village uses.
Today you will learn three kinds of property.
Property is the things people own and look after.
Some things belong to one person. Some belong to a whole family. Some belong to everybody.
Your uniform. Your toothbrush. Your shoes. Your school bag.
Personal property belongs to one person.
You ask before you touch somebody else's personal property.
The house. The cooking pot. The radio. The land and the goats.
Family property is used by everyone in the family.
Nobody in the home has to ask to eat from the family pot.
The water tap. The road. The health post. The school playground.
Community property is used by everyone in the village.
Careful! Everybody's does not mean nobody's.
If you break the tap, your neighbours carry no water tomorrow.
Look after community property the way you look after your own shoe.
Personal property has one owner. Ask that person first.
Taking without asking is stealing, even when the thing is small.

A lesson about public property, the things everybody in a place shares.
