Our Family Property
Lesson 4 of 5
12 min
Let's begin
Habimana stands beside his aunt at the market.
She counts coins into the seller's hand and takes a bag of sweet potatoes.
Habimana asks her where the coins came from.
Today you will learn what money is and where it comes from.
Money is what people use to buy things.
In Rwanda we count our money in Rwandan francs. We write it as Frw.
Money buys food, water, clothes, books and medicine.
Money does not grow on trees.
People earn money by doing jobs.
Habimana's aunt sells sweet potatoes. She is paid for what she sells.
Careful! The bank does not give money away. A person must work first.
Some things you buy are not things at all.
You pay a doctor to make you well. You pay for a haircut.
Helping like that is called a service.
A bank is a safe place to keep money.
Money in a pocket can be lost. Money in a bank is kept safe until the family needs it.
Worked example
Umutoni wants a new exercise book.
Step 1 Today she keeps a 50 Frw coin instead of spending it.
Step 2 Tomorrow she keeps another 50 Frw coin.
Step 3 Now she has 100 Frw, and she can buy the book.
That is saving. Small amounts kept today buy bigger things later.

Tip
Work first. Money after
Somebody did a job for every coin in the house.
So spend it on the needs first, and save a little for later.
