Roads and Messages
Lesson 2 of 4
11 min
Let's begin
Ishimwe's papa ties bananas onto his bicycle.
The bunches are heavy. The bicycle wobbles.
He pushes it down the road to the market.
Today you will learn how people and goods move.
Transport is how people and things move from one place to another.
Goods are things people carry: bananas, beans, sacks, water.
Most of that moving happens on a road.
You walk to school. That is transport.
A person who walks on the road is called a pedestrian.
Careful! Some children think only vehicles count. Walking counts too.
Say them out loud: a car, a bus, a bicycle, a motorcycle, a truck.
A bus carries many people at once.
A truck carries heavy goods, like sacks of potatoes.
A motorcycle carries one person quickly.
Careful! A boat is not road transport. A boat goes on water.
An aeroplane is not road transport either. It goes in the sky.
The road takes you to school in the morning.
The road takes a sick person to the health centre.
The road takes your mama to the market and home again.
A farmer grows food on the hill. The buyers are at the market.
Without a road, the food stays on the hill and spoils.
With a road, a truck takes it to the market the same day.
Roads make every journey faster and safer.
So we take care of our roads. We do not dig them or throw rubbish on them.
