Peace and Honesty
Lesson 4 of 6
11 min
Let's begin
Umutoni walks home along the path.
An old man is coming the other way.
She stops, puts out her hand and greets him.
Today you will learn what peace looks like at home and in your village.
In a peaceful home the family eats together.
One dish is put down and everybody shares it.
Nobody eats in a corner alone.
Nobody takes the biggest piece by force.
Mama carries water and Keza carries the small jerrycan.
Papa digs and Gatete pulls out the weeds.
The big sister helps the small brother wash.
Everybody has a job, so no one person is tired.
Your village is many homes next to each other.
Neighbours greet each other on the path.
You shake hands with an old person and you bow your head a little.
When somebody is sick, the neighbours come and help.
Even good neighbours have problems sometimes.
A goat eats somebody's beans. A child breaks a pot.
In a peaceful village, people talk about it.
They do not fight. They do not throw stones.
Careful! Peace is not only the leaders' work.
Greeting your neighbour is how a village keeps its peace.

Tip
Greet first. Talk it out
A greeting costs you nothing and it opens the way.
When something goes wrong, use your words before anything else.
