Peace and Honesty
Lesson 5 of 6
11 min
Let's begin
Two boys are playing well in the yard.
Then one of them calls the other a bad name.
The game stops. Now they are pushing.
Today you will learn how peace goes away, and how to bring it back.
Peace does not leave quietly. It leaves marks too.
People use bad words on each other.
People show no respect to anybody.
People tell lies. People fight.
Somebody is crying, and nobody goes to help.
Hatred grows, and big fighting between people is called war.
Careful! Many children think only hitting is harm.
So bad names feel free to say.
But a push hurts for a minute.
A bad name can hurt for many days.
Mutesi still remembers the name she was called last term.
A window is broken and nobody owns up.
Now the teacher cannot believe anybody.
The whole class loses something.
When you lie, people stop believing your true words too.
Peace can always come back. Here is how.
Stop. Take your hands down and step away.
Tell the truth. Say what really happened.
Say sorry. Say it to the person, not to the floor.
Mend it. Help to fix what was broken.
If it is too big for you, tell a grown-up you trust.
Tip
Stop. Tell. Sorry. Mend

True or false: bad words do not hurt anybody.
Answer: false. A word can hurt longer than a push.
Two children are fighting over a ball. What is the first thing to do?
Answer: stop. Nothing can be fixed while people are fighting.
You broke a chair and stayed quiet. Now everybody is being asked. What do you do?
Answer: tell the truth. Then help to mend the chair.
A big child keeps hurting a small one at break. What do you do?
Answer: tell a grown-up you trust. Some problems are too big for a child.
Name one thing that shows there is no peace in a place.
Answer: your own. Fighting, bad words, lying or crying are all good answers.
