J'aime mon quartier (Talking about where I live)

Mutesi's class is making a book called Nos quartiers (Our neighbourhoods). Every pupil writes one page about where they live and reads it to the class.

Here is Mutesi's page. By the end of this lesson you will write and say your own.

Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Mutesi. J'ai dix ans. J'habite à Nyamirambo, un quartier de Kigali, au Rwanda.

Mon quartier est grand et animé. Il y a une mosquée, une école primaire et beaucoup de boutiques. Il y a aussi un terrain de football.

Ma rue est calme et propre. J'aime mon quartier parce que mes amis habitent là.

3Words to describe a place

Mon quartier is masculine: mon quartier est grand. Ma rue is feminine: ma rue est grande.

4Grammar: giving a reason with parce que

Parce que means because. Use it to say WHY:

• J'aime mon quartier parce que mes amis habitent là.
• J'aime ma rue parce qu'elle est calme. (que becomes qu' before a vowel)

To ask why, say Pourquoi ?

5Say it right: /l/ and /r/

In Kinyarwanda, l and r are often the same sound. In French they are very different, and mixing them changes the meaning!

• l: put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth. la, le lit, lire.
• r: keep the tip of your tongue down and make a soft sound at the back of your throat, like a gentle gargle. la rue, le riz, rire.

Listen to the difference: le lit (the bed) and le riz (the rice); lire (to read) and rire (to laugh). Now say this silly sentence three times: « Le riz est sur le lit ! »

6Interaction: talk with a partner

A asks, B answers, then swap.

• A: « Tu habites où ? » B: « J'habite à … »
• A: « Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans ton quartier ? » B: « Il y a … »
• A: « Tu aimes ton quartier ? Pourquoi ? » B: « Oui, parce que … »
