De mon pays à mon quartier
Lesson 2 of 4
35 min
Gatete has just moved to Kigali from Rubavu, near Lake Kivu. Everything is new for him. At break time, Keza tells him about the neighbourhood where she lives.
What is there near your home? A market? A church or a mosque? A football pitch? Today you will say it in French.
Gatete : « Keza, tu habites où ? »
Aussi means also. Là-bas means over there. Une plage is a beach.

Habiter is an -er verb, like chanter. The h is silent, so je becomes j':

|---|---|
| j'habite | I live |
| tu habites | you live (one friend) |
| il / elle habite | he / she lives |
| nous habitons | we live |
To ask a friend, say Tu habites où ? To ask an adult politely, say Vous habitez où ?
Ask three friends « Tu habites où ? » and « Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans ton quartier ? ». Each friend answers with two places: « J'habite à … »
Tip
The silent h opens the door. Habiter starts with an h you do not say, so it behaves like a vowel: j'habite, never je habite. It is the same trick as j'écoute.
What does la mosquée mean?
Answer: the mosque.
Complete: Keza ___ à Kimironko. (habiter)
Answer: Keza habite à Kimironko.
Find the mistake: Je habite à Musanze.
Answer: J'habite à Musanze (j' before a silent h).
Ask your friend where she lives.
Answer: « Tu habites où ? »
Say: In my neighbourhood there is a health centre.
